Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 18 and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year. I use Insulin injections four times daily. My sugar levels still fluctuate a lot (fasting 180 mg/dL and post-meal sometimes 250 mg/dL plus. HbA1c last month was 9.1. I feel tired, sometimes dizzy.
Is an Insulin pump better for control than injections?
Also, can type 1 diabetes ever go away, or is it lifelong?
Is there any diet plan to stabilize?
I feel different from my friends, and it affects my confidence badly.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
It is very natural to feel overwhelmed at your age when dealing with type 1 diabetes. Let me answer these:
1. Why are sugars fluctuating? - Your fasting (around 180) and post-meal sugars (often above 250) are higher than the recommended range. This means your Insulin dose or timing, meal composition, or lifestyle pattern may need adjustment. HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) of 9.1 percent also confirms that your overall control is not optimal yet.
2. Insulin pump vs injections: Both methods can control sugars, but Insulin pumps often give better flexibility and control as they deliver Insulin continuously and allow you to adjust doses more precisely with meals. Many young patients find pumps helpful, especially when sugar fluctuations are large. However, success depends on proper training, regular monitoring, and commitment.
3. Will type 1 diabetes ever go away? - Type 1 diabetes is lifelong. It occurs because your pancreas no longer produces Insulin. At present, there is no permanent cure. But with proper Insulin therapy, diet, and lifestyle, you can live a completely normal and healthy life.
4. Diet plan to stabilize sugars:
Take small, balanced meals instead of large, heavy ones.
Avoid high-sugar and refined foods (colas, sweets, bakery items).
Prefer whole grains, vegetables, fruits with low glycemic index, pulses, lean proteins.
Maintain fixed meal timings.
Keep carbohydrate counting in mind if you are adjusting Insulin doses.
Stay hydrated and limit junk food.
5. Tiredness and dizziness: These symptoms can be from fluctuating sugars. Better control usually reduces these complaints.
I hope that this answers your query.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
