Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 34 years old and was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I went to the doctor because I had stomach pain and was vomiting after meals. I also had blurry vision. They did a blood test and found high ketones and autoantibodies, which confirmed type 1 diabetes. I do not understand how I got this since I am not a child or teenager. The doctor put me on an insulin pump, but it is so hard to manage. Why can I not just take tablets like patients with type 2 diabetes? I also feel scared that my kidneys or heart might get damaged because of this condition. Is there any way to prevent complications?
Kindly provide your guidance.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Type 1 diabetes, once known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone the body uses to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy. Various factors, such as genetics and certain viruses, may contribute to the development of type 1 diabetes. Although type 1 diabetes typically appears during childhood or adolescence, it can also develop in adults. Despite extensive research, type 1 diabetes currently has no cure. Treatment focuses on managing blood sugar levels through insulin, diet, and lifestyle to prevent complications. Treatment for type 1 diabetes includes:
The goal is to keep blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible to delay or prevent complications. Generally, the target is to keep blood sugar levels between 80 and 130 mg/dL before meals (4.44 to 7.2 mmol/L). After meals, blood sugar should not exceed 180 mg/dL (10 mmol/L) two hours after eating. Anyone with type 1 diabetes requires insulin therapy for life.
I hope this has helped you.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
