Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 27-year-old female diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 14 years. I use an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor, but my sugar still jumps a lot, especially after meals or when stressed. My last A1C (glycated hemoglobin) was 8.2, and my doctor was not happy. I try to stay active, but sometimes I feel low suddenly at night. I am scared of long-term stuff like kidney problems and neuropathy.
Are there new insulin types or systems that automatically adjust doses better?
Please suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
Living with type 1 diabetes is quite challenging, especially if your blood sugar levels are fluctuating. You mentioned using an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor.
There are modern insulin delivery systems and faster-acting insulins that usually give better post-meal control and fewer lows than older therapies. But first, I need to know what you are actually using. Following, I will provide some new pumps and glucose monitors that can help manage your fluctuating blood sugar levels.
Hybrid or automated closed-loop (“auto-adjusting”) insulin pumps plus newer, faster-acting mealtime insulins and more accurate CGMs have been shown in trials and real-world use to lower A1c (glycated hemoglobin), increase time-in-range and reduce hypoglycemia for many people.
I recommend keeping track of your blood sugar levels. If you find high fasting glucose levels, I advise monitoring your sugar levels during nighttime to rule out nocturnal hypoglycemia with reactive high fasting blood glucose. You can discuss this further with your caring diabetes doctor.
I hope this answers your query.
Let me know if I need to assist you further.
Thank you.
