Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 50 years old, and I have type 1 diabetes. Over the last year, I have gained about 26.45 pounds, and my sugars have been a nightmare. My HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) is now 10.1 percent. The odd thing is I have started losing a lot of hair, and my nails are really brittle. Could this be linked to a hormonal imbalance, or is it just stress and poor sugar control? I am feeling completely drained and do not know where to start fixing this.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am sorry to hear you are experiencing these issues. Let us break down your concerns:
Potential causes:
Hormonal imbalance: Conditions like hypothyroidism can cause hair loss and brittle nails. It is worth checking your thyroid function and other hormone levels.
Stress and poor sugar control: Chronic stress and poorly controlled diabetes can lead to nutritional deficiencies, affecting hair and nail health. High blood sugar levels can also impact overall health and energy levels.
Next steps:
Consult your healthcare provider: Discuss your symptoms and the possibility of hormonal imbalances. They may recommend blood tests to check your thyroid and other hormone levels.
Improve blood sugar control: Work with your healthcare provider to adjust your diabetes management plan. This might include changes to your insulin regimen, diet, and exercise routine.
Nutritional support: Ensure you are getting a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients like protein, iron, and vitamins. Consider supplements if recommended by your healthcare provider.
Stress management: Incorporate stress-reducing activities like exercise, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy.
Monitoring and follow-up:
Regular check-ups: Schedule regular appointments to monitor your HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) and overall health.
Symptom tracking: Keep a log of your symptoms and any changes you notice.
Please book a consultation with me if you would like more detailed information on any of these points, or if you have other questions.
I hope this has helped you.
Thank you.
