Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My partner’s last period ended about two weeks ago. She took Unwanted 72 (Levonorgestrel) the same night after a contraceptive risk. About six days later, she developed bleeding that became period-like, with cramps and clots, and then stopped.
Around 11 days after the first dose, she took another Unwanted 72. About eight hours later, we had intercourse again; the condom tore, and ejaculation occurred inside.
We want to know whether the pill she took earlier that day would still cover this second exposure or if another form of emergency contraception is needed.
Also, are there any concerns because she has already taken Unwanted 72 twice within a short period?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
She should take another emergency contraceptive pill (levonorgestrel pills like i-pill or Unwanted 72) to help prevent pregnancy.
The menstrual irregularities in your case could be due to a hormonal imbalance caused by repeated use of the emergency contraceptive pill. Since the pill was taken on time, there is almost no chance of pregnancy.
Abdominal pain and white discharge can occur as side effects of these emergency contraceptive pills, so there is usually no need to worry. Some people also experience withdrawal bleeding (the period-like bleeding that occurs when you take a break from hormonal birth control) due to the sudden hormonal changes caused by the medication.
Your next period may be somewhat unpredictable because of the hormonal imbalance caused by the emergency contraceptive pills. It may come earlier than expected or be delayed by about a week or so.
For now, wait and monitor for the next menstrual cycle. If the period is delayed, take a home urine pregnancy test seven days after the missed period date to help rule out pregnancy.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
