How to treat sore throat and nasal congestion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing a sore throat, chills, nasal congestion, and tenderness beneath my jaw. What actions should I take, and what might be the underlying cause of these symptoms?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

You are experiencing an upper respiratory tract infection or pharyngitis with an infectious cause. You may consider conducting a complete blood count (CBC) and an antistreptolysin O (ASO) titer for further evaluation.

  1. A prescription for Vitamin C 500 milligrams twice daily for five days may be recommended.

  2. It is advisable to avoid overly spicy foods.

  3. You may use a diluted Betadine gargle for relief.

If the complete blood count (CBC) CBC indicates signs of infection, an antibiotic such as a tablet of Amoxicillin (a type of penicillin) may be prescribed.

Ensure you are drinking plenty of water. Increased intake of fruit juice is also encouraged.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
