The urachus, a structure that joins the bladder and umbilicus in the growing newborn, develops a pocket-like growth of tissue called a urachal cyst. Even though it usually vanishes before birth, few persons may still have portions of the urachus. The symptoms include abdominal pain, umbilical discharge, fever and can be diagnosed using an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis.
