Can uncleaned sex toys cause urinary tract infections?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Sorry for the graphic question. I am a 30-year-old male who used my sex toys nine days ago that I have never shared with anyone, but I was drunk and forgot to get them cleaned properly before use. So I have not washed them in a while. I fear a urinary tract infection but no symptoms yet.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Just remain relaxed. No significant risk of urinary tract infections. Just have plenty of water, and you will be fine. I hope you washed them after the last time you used them.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for your response.

Can I follow up with these questions?

1. Since I have not had sex with another person since my last clear test (sex before that test was over a year before), then that means I have no risk of sexually transmitted disease (STD) because I have not shared those toys with anyone else, and I have not had sex since my last clear test. General STDs are only contracted from having sex with people who have STD or if sex toys are shared with someone who has an STD. Correct?

2. Even if I had a urinary tract infection (UTI), a UTI is not something that is sexually transmissible and is very rare in men anyway. Is that correct?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, there is no risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Remain relaxed for that. You are right. If sex toys are shared, there would be a risk. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can occur in any individual. Yes, males have less risk, but yes, that can happen.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your resonse.

I just wanted to ask one more question: Few months back the urine sample I provided for STD testing had to be from a home testing kit due to COVID, the clinics were not running in-person appointments. I stored the urine sample in my table desk drawer for two days before sending it out through mail package. I did not refrigerate it. The test came back clear but is it still valid as I did not refrigerate it and I did not send it out immediately. I have not had any sex since, so I think I should still be clear?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Most tests for common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are serological and taken from blood. Therefore, a blood workup is done to rule out most STDs. An improper sampling of urine could result in false-positive detection of urinary tract infections (UTI), and this is not a serious issue. So you can remain relaxed. Since you have shown no symptoms of any kind of STD, you can remain relaxed. You are safe. Try to ignore any sort of overthinking.

Thanks.
