Can my mother, who is taking the medicine Pradaxa for atrial fibrillation, have the vaccine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother has atrial fibrillation, and she has been prescribed Pradaxa. She is 65 years old, and I doubt if she could take the vaccine or not. Kindly help me. She is not taking medicines for any other conditions. Also, kindly tell me is there any cure for atrial fibrillation. What should we do to help her?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am not sure what you meant by the vaccine. If it is a COVID-19 vaccine, it is best to be given since persons with risk factors such as heart disease, immune-compromised states, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes mellitus are prone to develop serious COVID-19, and the vaccine is expected to be preventing severe disease. However, please consult your visiting cardiologist for this opinion and further treatment of atrial fibrillation.
