Should I get a tetanus shot for infection caused by rusty earring?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I accidently wore a rusty earring. My ear is little sore but does not seem to be infected. Should I get a tetanus shot? Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The infection of ear may be minor but for full protection you should take a booster dose of tetanus toxoid if you have not taken it in last ten years. It is recommended that you take a booster dose of tetanus once in every ten years. So, if you have not taken any then take one. It will help you for the next 10 years. If inflammation of ear increases do not forget to take an antibiotic course for five days.

I hope you found this useful.

Take care.
