Why are booster shots necessary after the initial vaccine dose?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 42-year-old man, and I am a bit confused about these booster shots for vaccines. I mean, I got my first shot, and they said it was supposed to protect me, right? So why do I need to go back for another one? Is it just some trend or fad going around? I am not sure if I should bother getting the second shot. Does it really make that much of a difference? And are there any risks or side effects I should be worried about? Please clarify.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

A booster shot is a dose of vaccine administered after a person has received the original vaccine (referred to as a primary dose or primary series, if multiple doses are required). Immunity from the initial vaccine may decline over time, and a booster shot helps the immune system enhance the protection it provides. As for the vaccine prescribed by your doctor, could you please provide more information so that I can offer detailed assistance?

Thank you.
