Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I got my period nine days ago. I had sex five days ago, and we used a condom. I took a morning-after pill that day. Today is the eighth day, and I have brownish vaginal discharge and abdominal cramps. What could this be? Also, I will not get my period for another three weeks.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
There can be side effects after taking the morning-after pill (Levonorgestrel) because it is a hormonal medicine, so irregular bleeding, spotting, and change in the menstrual cycle is a very common side effect of this medication. Some people call this withdrawal bleeding. So do not worry; this is nothing abnormal, and you will be fine in two to three days. I suggest you take painkillers like Drotaverine or Mefenamic acid, and for vomiting, take the tablet Domperidone. Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent.
Patient's Query
Thank you doctor for the reply,
Should I take the medicines even if there is heavy bleeding?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
If there is heavy bleeding, I suggest you take the tablet Tranexamic acid 500 mg thrice daily to control the bleeding. Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent. This happened for the first time after taking plan B (Levonorgestrel). If it occurs in the future or during your next cycle, we might need some investigations to know the cause; otherwise, nothing has to be done, and you will be fine in two to three days.
