what could cause a greenish vaginal discharge?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had a greenish vaginal discharge for more than a month. It comes and goes. I went to a gynecologist, and she took a vaginal swab and the result was Gram stain, white blood cells: +1, no bacterial vaginosis present, Nugent score is 3, moderate growth Candida albicans. She had prescribed me to take Fluconazole 150 mg capsule once a week for 2 weeks. But it came back again. I feel really disgusted and my doctor went for a vacation. So I told myself to try to talk to you. Can you please help me? I cannot go to another doctor in my country, especially since I am having sex with my boyfriend, not a husband and she was the only one that can understand my situation. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. To cure this infection you should take proper antibiotic and antifungal treatment.

I suggest you to take the following for seven days-

1. Tablet. Doxycycline (Hypromellose, Polyethylene Glycol) 100 mg twice daily after meal.

2. Tablet. Metrogyl (Ethylcellulose, Lactose) 400 mg thrice daily after a meal.

3. Tablet. Pan (Pantoprazole, Domperidone) 40 mg twice before a meal.

4. Capsule. Clingen vaginal suppository (Clindamycin and Clotrimazole) keep this tablet in the vagina while sleeping.

To prevent such infection repeatedly you should keep your genital area clean and dry, change undergarments twice a day, and wash your genitals with soft cleansers.

Hope this information helps you. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response. Is it fine to take these medicines after taking Fluconazole for the last two weeks? Should my boyfriend take anything or just me? When can I have sex after taking the pills? Is my condition serious? Should I be afraid? Because I thought I have STI (sexually transmitted infections). Kindly suggest. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is no need to worry, it is just a fungal infection that can be easily managed with the help of medicines. It is better to avoid intercourse till the infection is there (might take two weeks ) or at least use condoms while having intercourse. If he does not have any symptoms like urine-related issues like burning, micturition or increased frequency of urination, any lesions on genitals, or any discharge then he does not need any treatment and you can safely take these medicines even if you had Fluconazole (microcrystalline cellulose, povidone) last week.

Thank you.
