What causes a vaginal infection after sexual intercourse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 32-year-old female and I noticed a rash in my vagina after having sex on the last day of my period. I also had some blood spotting around the same time. The rash is causing me discomfort, and I am unsure what to apply to help heal it.

Could you please provide advice on the best treatment for this rash and if any additional care is required?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Based on your symptoms, I strongly believe that you may have developed a vaginal infection caused by bacterial or fungal organisms. This could have been triggered by the recent sexual activity, as bacteria or fungi may have entered the vagina.

Recommendations:

Diagnostic Test: Please do a high vaginal and endocervical swab test and share the results with me.

Medications:

Injection Ceftriaxone 1g: Start with a single dose.

Doxycycline 100mg (2 tabs): Take two tablets twice daily for two weeks.

Metronidazole 400mg (2 tabs): Take two tablets three times daily for two weeks.

If you have more concerns or questions, please feel free to schedule a direct appointment or follow up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope this helps.
