Why has my vaginal irritation not resolved after using antifungal medications?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have itching in my vaginal area for the past three days. There are no other symptoms but just irritation and itching. There are no bumps or rash, but small white acne inside the lining of the vagina. I applied antifungal cream (Clotrimazole) and took antifungal medicine Difluzol capsule and Furagin 50 mg for the past three days. My itching has not been resolved. Can you suggest some other treatment?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

Persistent itching in the vaginal area can have various causes, including yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or skin conditions such as dermatitis. You need to undergo some routine testing for the same. There are some general measures you can take to help alleviate discomfort and promote vaginal health and are:

  1. Avoid using scented soaps, bubble baths, or harsh irritants in the vaginal area, as these can disrupt the natural balance and cause further irritation.

  2. Wear loose-fitting, breathable cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing, as this can trap moisture and contribute to itching.

  3. Practice good hygiene by gently washing the vaginal area with mild, unscented soap and warm water. Avoid douching, as it can disrupt the natural balance of the vagina.

  4. Consider using a water-based lubricant during sexual activity to reduce friction and potential irritation.

  5. Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and manage stress, as these factors can influence vaginal health.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
