Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I took a Fluconazole 150 mg tablet twice mistakenly within 27 hours for vaginal infection. I am not feeling any side effects till now (but it has only been 26 hours after my second dose). I keep checking for any visible colour changes in my skin, eyes, and urine, and it is fine till now. What should I do? Does it show any late side effects that I should look for?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
It is normal for you to be worried after taking what you think is an overdose. However, Fluconazole can be given as high as 600 milligrams per day (commutative dose per day). So, if you took 150 mg twice (second dose taken almost 26 hours after the first), it does not constitute an overdose. You are not expected to have any side effects. So, calm down, there is no need to panic, as panicking will only worsen your symptoms of anxiety.
Additionally, Fluconazole treatment for vaginal (fungal infection or vaginal yeast infection) should be for a minimum of three days. It is recommended that you take another 150 mg of Fluconazole 24 hours after your second dose. This will ensure that the vaginal infection is well-treated.
Also, please note that the medication is for a yeast or fungal infection. If your vaginal infection is not caused by yeast or fungal infection, you are not likely to see improvement after the three doses of Fluconazole. Do keep me updated, and please take good care of yourself.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had consulted a gynecologist online before taking this medicine, and she said not to take consecutive doses, so I was concerned. Thank you for clarifying that it is not an overdose.
My vaginal infection symptoms started more than a week ago. There was white clotted discharge; both labia were itchy and irritated, along with a burning feeling going inside the vaginal canal. I had a similar episode four to five years ago, which was treated with a single Fluconazole dose.
For this onset, I started my medication on the 17th but did not get much relief after the first dose, which is understandable given the nature of these infections. I am feeling less itchy after the second dose, but the inside wall of the outer labia is still swollen and itchy. There is slight burning and itching around the vaginal opening. There is no burning during urination. The discharge is no longer clotted but runny.
Should I take a third dose today or wait for 72 hours for the irritation to reduce and dose accordingly?
Can I take other antibiotics along with this medicine for a holistic treatment?
I have attached a prescription from my previous consultation. There are a few medicines listed. Are we supposed to take all of these together?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Whitish discharge indicates it is a vaginal yeast infection. You should take the third dose of Fluconazole. Treatment is either three consecutive days of Fluconazole or vaginal antifungal suppositories for six days. In recurrent infection (having multiple episodes of infection within three months), we treat for longer than six days for pessaries and also for oral Fluconazole.
Since you still have itching, you can also use Clotrimazole vaginal cream and rub it on the vaginal entrance and surrounding areas morning and evening for a week. That will help eliminate the itching.
Other medications in the prescription you attached (Doxycycline and Metronidazole) are not for vaginal yeast infection, but there is no harm in taking them, as they will help clear any asymptomatic vaginal non-fungal infection you may have. You can continue and complete them.
Use Clotrimazole vaginal cream one application in the morning, zero at noon, and one application in the evening (I-0-I) for a week.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
