Do Venlafaxine or birth control pills cause vomiting?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have recently started becoming sexually active with a boy, and every time things become more intense, I begin to feel overheated and always end up vomiting or feeling a desperate urge to vomit. I am taking 150 milligrams per day of Venlafaxine and Drospirenone-Ethinylestradiol-Levomethyfolate 3 mg (milligrams)-0.02 milligrams-0.451 mg (24 tablets)/0.451 mg (4 tablets) for birth control.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The symptoms you are experiencing during sexual activity could be a side effect of your medication. Venlafaxine is commonly prescribed as an antidepressant, but it can also cause side effects such as increased body temperature, skin flushing, and sweating. These symptoms may lead to dehydration, which can trigger nausea and vomiting.

The hormonal birth control you are taking, which includes Drospirenone, Ethinylestradiol, and Levomethyfolate, can also cause nausea and vomiting as side effects. In addition, the supplement containing Folic acid and vitamin B12 may sometimes cause digestive issues such as diarrhea or vomiting in some individuals.

To manage these symptoms, you may want to speak with your healthcare provider about adjusting your medication dosage or trying a different medication. They can help you understand the benefits and risks of making changes and guide you toward the best plan for your specific situation.

In the meantime, you may try strategies to help manage your symptoms during sexual activity. These include staying well hydrated, taking breaks as needed, and talking openly with your partner about your concerns.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
