Is my 2-month-old baby's weight too high for her age?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My baby's birth weight was 6.17 lb. She is currently two months old and weighs 13.45 lb.

Is she overweight or obese at her age?

Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your question.

At two months of age, the baby normally gains 1.8 to 2.2 lb of weight per month. The possibility of gaining extra weight could occur if the baby is fed too much. The explanation is quite simple: babies can cry for various reasons other than being hungry, but their parents might consider them hungry and give the baby more feedings.

It can be harder to control the amount of food babies consume if they are bottle-fed because there is the possibility of overfeeding the baby.

Concerning your baby, she gained a bit of extra weight, which is about 1.5 lb more than usual. But even if the extra weight gain is plotted on the growth chart, it will fall into the normal range for her age.

The current weight of 6.1 kg (13.4 lb) is absolutely normal for her age. You have nothing to be concerned about; only do not overfeed your baby. If you feed the baby from the bottle, inform me.

I hope that I have answered your questions.

Thank you.
