I am losing weight. Can I quit chewing tobacco safely?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently in the process of losing weight and have successfully reduced my weight from 362 pounds to 287 pounds over the past five to six months. I also chew tobacco regularly. I want to quit tobacco, but I am concerned about how it might affect my weight loss journey. I have always heard that quitting can lead to weight gain because nicotine affects metabolism and digestion.

  1. Should I continue focusing on my weight loss first?

  2. Should I prioritize quitting tobacco while still working on my weight?

  3. How can I manage both goals safely?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

First of all, congratulations on your incredible weight loss! Dropping from 362 to 287 pounds in just a few months shows remarkable dedication and discipline. It is completely understandable that you want to maintain this momentum.

Regarding quitting tobacco, it is true that some people may experience a slight weight gain after stopping because nicotine slightly boosts metabolism and suppresses appetite. However, this effect is usually temporary, and the health benefits of quitting far outweigh any short-term changes in weight. Continuing to use tobacco, even in chewing form, keeps you at risk for oral cancer, gum disease, and heart problems.

The good news is that you can work on both goals at the same time. Focus on maintaining your healthy eating habits and regular physical activity as you quit. Keeping your hands and mouth busy with sugar-free gum, crunchy vegetables, or other low-calorie snacks can help reduce cravings.

If quitting feels challenging, your doctor can suggest nicotine replacement therapies or medications that support cessation without negatively impacting weight. You have already demonstrated great control over your health, and quitting tobacco will strengthen your progress, protecting your heart, lungs, and overall well-being for the long term.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
