How can I get rid of a persistent wet cough with green mucus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing a cough for almost two months. It is sometimes dry but mostly wet, producing yellow or green mucus. The cough has been quite heavy during this period. I have been managing it by drinking herbal tea and taking Montair LC tablets (Montelukast and Levocetrizine) at night along with Ascoril (Ambroxol, Levosalbutamol, and Guaifenesin) syrup.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

You have been experiencing a cough for nearly two months, mostly wet with yellow or green mucus. The color of the mucus may sometimes indicate an airway infection or inflammation, even if your X-ray and blood tests are normal. It is reassuring that nothing serious has shown up, but since the cough has lasted this long, it is important to look deeper for the underlying cause.

The most likely reason could be post-viral airway inflammation or bronchial hyperreactivity, which can persist for several weeks after a respiratory infection. Other possibilities include allergic airway disease or mild asthma, sinusitis with post-nasal drip, or irritation from cold, dry air. Sometimes, acid reflux (GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease) can also contribute, especially if you notice throat irritation or worsening symptoms at night.

Since your sputum is yellowish, it would be best to get a sputum examination, including culture and microscopy, to check for any infection that may need specific treatment. I would also advise visiting a pulmonologist in person so that your chest can be examined with a stethoscope. Based on the findings, the doctor may recommend spirometry, allergy testing, or a repeat chest X-ray to rule out causes such as asthma (a chronic lung disease where airways get narrow and swell), bronchiectasis (a chronic lung condition where airways get permanently scarred and widened, causing mucus buildup), or atypical infections.

In the meantime, continue your current medications for symptom relief, but avoid prolonged use of cough syrups without medical supervision. Supportive measures like steam inhalation, warm fluids, and keeping your room air slightly humid can help. If you experience heartburn or throat irritation, a short course of Pantoprazole 40 mg once daily before breakfast may also be beneficial.

Please follow up if your cough continues beyond eight weeks or if you develop breathlessness, chest tightness, fever, or blood in sputum. With the right evaluation and targeted treatment, such coughs usually resolve completely.

Could you please share a few more details?

  1. Is there any history of asthma, allergies, or lung disease in your family?

  2. Did you have any recent viral infection, sore throat, or fever before this cough began?

  3. Has anyone else in your family or workplace had similar flu-like or respiratory symptoms recently?

  4. Do you experience heartburn, throat irritation, or cough that worsens at night or after meals, suggesting acid reflux?

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
