Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 26-year-old male suffering from Wilson's disease. I have been taking tablet Penicillamine 500 mg twice daily. Serum Ceruloplasmin level is 5 mg/dL, and 24 hours urinary copper is 600 micrograms.

Recently there was a drug shortage, so the dose had to be reduced to 250 mg daily. Now stocks have been refilled. Now I am on 1000 mg/day. My doctor has also suggested taking a Zinc tablet. I am looking for a second opinion.

I have read that too fast copper removal can have adverse effects. Please advice

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I understand you are worried about your disease and the recently changed treatment plan. Copper is a vital ingredient needed for the development of our body, as nerves, bones, collagen, and melanin pigment all need copper.

But if accumulated in excess, it can deposit in tissues vital to the body's normal function, causing disturbances. How fast it should be removed, is different for everyone and depends on how much has been accumulated and how much is being heaped upon regularly. Therefore, it would be better to stick to your treating physician's guidelines as he treats you according to your current condition.

I hope it helps. Please feel free to contact me if you have more questions. I would be happy to assist.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
