Can protective equipment reduce the risk of digital dental X-ray exposure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need to take digital dental X-rays today because two of them did not work or were incorrectly positioned. Do these X-rays pose any risk to me? Like eyes? The dentist did not provide any protective equipment.

Thanking you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Regular dental X-rays called intraoral periapical radiographs (IOPA) are commonly performed that need angle positioning, and no protection of lead or any shield is required for this. It is only in pregnant or individuals with medical issues some safety measures might be taken. Dental X- rays are sophisticated enough now with the advent of new-age technology that they do not pose any harm to your facial structures. You say you need four dental X-rays. For that, you can go for an OPG (orthopantomogram). That is the best option to see all of your teeth in both arches in a full-fledged X-ray picture. I suggest you to go for an OPG. Also, what issue do you have with your teeth?

I hope this helps.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

It is because I only needed to check the fillings in my four front teeth and between them. The fillings are old, so just to make sure there are no problems under or around them. So you say these single X-rays pose almost no risk to the eyes?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No risk unless you have any other medical issues, no eye or ENT problem or anything, right? Is it the first time you have been exposed to an X-ray? I would like to know that information from you because some individuals would be sensitive, but you would be glad to know from me that you can avert even those effects by taking appropriate measures.

I hope this helps.

Regards.
