How does the Zika virus spread?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old woman. Suddenly there has been an increase in the amount of mosquitoes in my area, and I have been hearing a lot about Zika fever. Is this a dangerous illness? How does it spread? What are the initial symptoms of this disease? What are the precautionary measures to be followed? Are mosquitoes the only source of this disease?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Zika fever is a viral disease transmitted through mosquito bites. The spread of the Zika virus occurs by:

  1. The primary vector for the Zika virus is the Aedes species of mosquito.

  2. These mosquitoes are also responsible for transmitting dengue and chikungunya viruses.

  3. An infected pregnant woman can pass the virus to her fetus, which can result in birth defects such as microcephaly (smaller head).

  4. Zika virus can be transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person.

  5. Although rare, the Zika virus can be spread through blood transfusions.

The symptoms of Zika virus infection include:

  1. A low-grade fever is common.

  2. Maculopapular rash (flat, discolored and raised bumps).

  3. Pain in smaller joints of hands and feet.

  4. Redness of the eyes.

  5. Muscle pain and headache.

Symptoms usually appear within three to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and can last for two to seven days.

Precautionary Measures:

  1. Avoid mosquito bites.

  2. Use insect repellents.

  3. Wear protective clothing.

  4. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants can reduce skin exposure.

  5. Use mosquito nets when sleeping, to avoid mosquito bites.

  6. Ensure windows and doors are screened to keep mosquitoes out.

  7. Avoid stagnant water.

  8. Use larvicides to kill mosquito larvae.

  9. Use condoms to reduce the risk of sexual transmission of Zika virus.

  10. Must get physically examined by a treating doctor.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
