Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was involved in an intercourse activity with my girlfriend. All though I have used the protection, the discharge got spilled in the vagina. She had not taken contraceptive medication, and her menstrual cycle will start tomorrow. Kindly suggest what has to be done.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

There is nothing to be done or worried about when a regular menstrual cycle occurs.

A woman with a 28 to 32-day cycle will start her ovulation on the 12th or 16th day of the period. The life of an egg is 24 hours and the sperm lasts for 72 hours. There is no chance for the egg to be alive till the next period and sperm cannot be alive till the next ovulation. Hence, the chance of pregnancy is nil. If one is unsure of the date of the menstrual cycle or there is a delay or irregularity of previous periods, there can be a chance of pregnancy. In such cases, an emergency contraceptive pill can be taken within 24 hours after intercourse.

The emergency contraceptive pill is a high dose of progesterone hormone that is produced in the body during the second half of the ovulation period. The pill will increase the thickness of the inner lining of the uterus, making it unfavorable for a possible pregnancy. As it is a single dose, it has no strength to stand on and falls off. Bleeding of the increased thickness can occur within seven to ten days.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
