Acute otitis media (AOM) is a condition, which is frequently encountered in children under 5 years and one of the most troublesome disease. This article discusses the causes, incidence, risk factors, symptoms, prevention of the disease and role of homeopathy in combating the disease.

Homeopathic Management of Acute Otitis Media

Acute otitis media (AOM) is the presence of inflammation in the middle ear accompanied by the rapid onset of signs and symptoms of an ear infection.

Frequently it occurs in infants and children. The most common causative organisms are Streptococcus pneumonia, Hemophilus influenza, Moraxella catarrhalis and human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV).

Prevalence of AOM is annually reported and mostly reported in July and December and children under 5 years are most commonly affected.

Route of Infection:

The route of infection is mainly through eustachian tube and external ear infection.

Risk Factors:

The common risk factors of AOM are a frequent infection of the respiratory tract, prolonged use of the bottle for feeding, nasal allergy, congenital defect like cleft palate, etc.

Symptoms, which are frequently encountered, are pain in the ear, excessive crying, fever, cough, nasal discharge, hearing loss and rubbing, etc.

Prolonged breastfeeding can protect from otitis media. The bottle-fed child should be correctly fed in the upright position.

Homeopathic Management:

  • Homeopathy is very much efficacious in improving the signs and symptoms of otitis media as well as breaking the tendency of recurrence of the disease.
  • Though the treatment is completely on the basis of individual patient's complaints, still these are the frequently used medicines for acute otitis media. But keeping in mind that this is only a guide and should not be used without proper consultation of a well-trained homoeopathic physician.
  • Belladonna, Chamomilla, Sulfur, Mercurius solubilis, Silicea and Pulsatilla are the medicines used separately on the strict indication for the management of otitis media.
