Are chest pain and abdominal pain in a 20-year-old suggestive of gastritis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old male, 6'4 feet, and around 165 pounds. For around two months or a little over now, I have had chest pains and weird abdominal pains.

I first went to the doctor when the symptoms began and was prescribed Omeprazole and Carafate. They did not seem to help all that much. I often wonder if it is stress or anxiety because the symptoms seem to subside if I catch myself not thinking about it.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

My first possibility remains of gastritis and reflux disease. Stress and anxiety precipitate and aggravate this. The probability of this being cardiac is much less in this age group.

I suggest some preventive measures to you. Please follow them.

  1. You should avoid a fatty, oily, and spicy diet.
  2. Do some walks after having food instead of taking a rest.
  3. Have multiple small meals instead of heavy meals.
  4. Have regular sleep habits and avoid stress.
  5. You can use relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing to control stress.
  6. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits.
  7. Avoid smoking and alcohol, if any.
  8. Elevate the head end of the bed or use pillows during sleep in order to decrease reflux.

Just to relieve your anxiety, you can get an ECG (electrocardiograph) done and upload it.

How long have you been on Omeprazole?

This problem is a chronic one and needs prolonged antacids and prokinetics. Here, we should change the salt and add prokinetic to it.

I suggest taking a tablet of Pan DSR 40 mg (Pantoprazole plus Domperidone combination) or a capsule of Ramiprill LS(Calcium Sulfate dihydrate) before breakfast once a day for two to three weeks. Better than Carafate (Sucralfate), you can use Syrup Sucral O (Sucralfate) two teaspoons three times a day. And certainly, you try to ignore this, as it seems nothing serious, and anxiety will increase.

Hope this helps you get back if you have any doubts.

Thank you.
