What can I do to address persistent stomach pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing stomach pain and nausea for over two months. I underwent a gastroscopy and colonoscopy along with esophagus biopsies, and the results showed mild gastritis without Helicobacter infection. I have been taking a PPI- 40 mg of tablet Nexium (Esomeprazole) for three weeks, but my symptoms persist. I would like to seek further advice and guidance to address my ongoing symptoms. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been checked for pancreas and liver issues, and the results showed lipase at 26/UI and ALT at 59. The doctors have mentioned that the slightly elevated ALT level is not a cause for immediate concern. I wonder if my symptoms could be a result of the slightly elevated liver enzymes. Additionally, I have been on PPI treatment for gastritis for three to four weeks, but my symptoms have not resolved. Is it common for gastritis to persist despite PPI treatment, and what could be the potential reasons for my symptoms? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your liver enzymes are slightly elevated, so it is important to check for fatty liver or alcohol consumption (if any).

However, your symptoms are not caused by the ALT(alanine aminotransferase) level of 59. ALT elevation itself does not cause symptoms; your symptoms are likely related to stomach issues like gastritis. Gastritis may take some time to resolve. You can switch to the recommended medication. I hope your symptoms will improve within a week or so.

Additionally, try to avoid stress as it can increase stomach acid production, which may exacerbate your symptoms. Taking the prescribed medication should help improve your condition.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
