What causes right-sided abdominal pain and yellowish sclera?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been experiencing mild pain in the right side of my abdomen, along with a slight but noticeable weight loss. I also observed a yellowish discoloration in the sclera (whites) of my eyes, which may indicate jaundice.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
The mild right-sided abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes (possible jaundice), and slight weight loss are symptoms that can sometimes be related to liver or biliary issues, even when initial tests appear normal. I would want to confirm whether your liver function tests (LFTs) and bilirubin levels were specifically included in the blood work, as these help assess how well your liver is functioning and whether the yellow discoloration is due to elevated bilirubin. If they have not been done yet, I would recommend ordering them. As for the dark yellow stool after starting the antacid and antibiotic, this is generally not a cause for concern. Both medications can affect the color of your stool. As long as it is not pale/grey (which could suggest a lack of bile), black (possible bleeding), or red (fresh blood), the color change is typically benign.
In the meantime, I suggest continuing with a light, low-fat diet, avoiding alcohol, and staying well hydrated. Keep an eye on any progression of symptoms, such as worsening yellowing of the eyes, increased pain, or changes in your stool color. If any of these occur, please let me know immediately so we can reassess and potentially repeat or expand the workup.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
