Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty surgery and got Mycobacterium fortuitum (MBF). I have been on antibiotics for six months now. The MBF caused me to get abscesses on the incision. They would fill with fluid, and eventually surface break open. Then I would pack the holes until healed. Then I started getting abscesses in other areas of my body, not at the incision site. I had an ovarian cyst violently ruptured. And now, after six months and still on long-term antibiotics, I have a new abscess. My Infection says it is not related, but I am puzzled as to why everything that is happening with my body is an abscess, and it is not related. They are now giving me antibiotics for MRSA. My throat swells and gets sore off and on like I have strep. Inside, my ears itch, and random abscesses keep coming up all in my abdomen area. My past medications are Doxycycline, Minocycline, and Amikacin. Currently, I am under Levaquin and Bactrim. I have had CT scans, ultrasounds, and culture swabs done. Before having the surgery, I had no issues. Kindly guide me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand you have MBF (Mycobacterium fortuitum) infection and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), based on clinical evaluation and culture reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). MBF requires treatment with the current medications you are on for periods extending from 6 to 12 months. I understand prolonged use of antibiotics can be a frustrating experience. Please understand the need for it and continue with it. One of the reasons for an MBF infection is reduced immunity. This can account for your MRSA infection also.

Please ask your specialist to get tests done to check your immune status.

Take care. I hope I have answered your query. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
