Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I suffer from acne. In my teenage, I had severe acne and was prescribed many antibiotics before being put on Isotretinoin capsules. It was a gradual process, but eventually, my skin cleared completely. After this, I found I would only ever get the odd spot now and again. However, I have noticed my skin getting considerably worse in the past two years. Although it is nowhere near as bad as before, I still suffer from breakouts, especially around the mouth, chin, and occasionally the forehead. I tend to find the breakout worse around the mouth area, and I usually get painful under the skin spots towards the forehead. In addition, my skin can be quite sensitive to products, so I use a simple face wash and exfoliate twice a week. I hope to find out if I can do anything to resolve this issue. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Acne is a skin condition affecting oily skin. Though it usually fades away after adolescence and more so by mid-twenties, it is not uncommon for it to persist or recur in the twenties and even later.

Other than oily skin, factors like hormonal imbalance, stress, and diet also determine the occurrence of acne.

Besides drugs, I suggest the following lifestyle changes.

1. Do not pick ever at any lesion.

2. Use a toner twice a day to cleanse the pores from deep within so that you can remove all the oil and dirt completely, which is impossible with face wash alone.

3. Use a Benzoyl peroxide-based face wash

4. Get your blackheads and whiteheads removed by a dermatologist so that they do not convert into acne

5. Avoid food with a high glycemic index. Instead, consume a high protein and low carbohydrate diet. Do not skip breakfast.

6. Sleep for eight hours.

Please consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them and start following the treatment with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
