Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

A few months ago, an acral nevus appeared on the underside of my four-year-old daughter's toe. It was irregularly shaped and had dark brown pigmentation in four furrows of skin. However, today its appearance has changed. Now it has pigmentation in five furrows of skin and looks more oval-shaped.

Can acral nevus grow in children?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Benign proliferation of melanocytes is visible. Although the risk of nevus evolving into melanoma is significantly less. Do a self-examination of the skin to look for changes and detect them early if required. Also, go for a skin biopsy to confirm where a sample tissue is removed from the site and sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope (suspicious looking sore on the skin).

Take necessary prevention measures like avoiding mid-day sun.

  • Use sunscreen lotion even on a cloudy day.
  • Wear protective clothing that covers arms and legs.
  • Avoid long-term sun exposure.
  • Avoid sunburn.
  • Avoid repeated exposure to radiation or exposure to certain chemicals.

Also, let me know if there is any family history of skin cancer.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

There is no family history of skin cancer. But I have moles, and her grandmother has a lot of moles that keep appearing. The patient was born with a decent-sized mole or birthmark on her scalp.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

No need to worry. Stay relaxed.

It is infrequent for children to develop melanoma or skin cancer.

It is widespread in children to develop moles or nevi. They may darken as they grow older. There is nothing to worry about. It is benign melanocyte proliferation.

No need to panic.

Follow prevention measures.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Is it possible for more furrows to appear and for the shape of the nevi to change before it settles? It seems pretty quickly that it has changed within three months.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Observe for changes in lesion but if suspicious looking like a change in borders or size is noticed, then get a biopsy of the lesion done.

It is common in children as they grow older lesions may show variations. However, the lesion is normal no need to worry.

Order a biopsy to rule out malignancy if feeling suspicious about the lesion.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
