Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have leg pain since a week. My doctor prescribed the tablet Naproxen but that is giving me stomach pains and the pain in my leg has gotten alot worse.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

How are you doing? I am sorry to hear that the medication you were prescribed is causing you discomfort and that your leg pain has worsened. Tablet Naproxen belongs to a class of medications known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs work by blocking the production of certain chemicals in the body that causes inflammation, pain, and fever. One of the ways that NSAIDs can cause stomach pain is by blocking the production of prostaglandins, which are substances that help protect the lining of the stomach and intestines. When prostaglandin production is reduced, the protective lining of the stomach can become damaged, leading to stomach pain and inflammation. In addition, NSAIDs can also reduce blood flow to the stomach, which can contribute to the development of ulcers and other digestive issues. You can try over-the-counter PPI (proton pump inhibitors) to help manage your stomach pain. Also, you can ask your doctor to change to another group of medication.

If you need, I can make a prescription for you.

You can also apply local gel to decrease leg pain. In the meantime, it is important to manage your leg pain. You can try:

  1. Resting your leg and elevating it.
  2. Apply ice to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
  3. Use a compression bandage to reduce swelling.
  4. Stretch and do light exercises to improve circulation in your leg.
