What are the post-surgical complications of adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am getting my adenoids and tonsils removed next week. How long will it take to recover? Will it help issues with a stuffy nose and post-nasal drip? Please tell me how bad the pain will be, how long it will last, and if it will help or even cause new problems.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. This is a safe operation when done with good hands. You may ask your operating surgeon to do cryoablation as it gives better results, fewer complications, and faster recovery. 1. Pain will be there for two days, which can be reduced by giving adequate analgesics. Usually, Tylenol suffices. Some patients are given severe pain anesthetic lozenges and more potent painkillers. If everything goes well, the pain will be less by two to four days. However, while swallowing, there may be a slight pain. Therefore, it takes a few more days. 2. Initially, you will be asked to take a cold diet on the day of surgery. A cold diet comprises ice creams and cold juices. Although there may be a dull pain, it will help throat muscles to recover as swallowing help in their action and movement. 3. Adenoids are the ones causing a stuffy nose and post-nasal drip. This will reduce once your adenoids are removed. Your pain will not be there for years after the surgery. That is a misconception. 4. Suppose you have any sinonasal inflammation other than adenoid enlargement. It can cause a stuffy nose and post-nasal drip. If a CT scan has been done for your nose and sinuses, please upload it so we can tell you more about that. Adenotonsillectomy is a safe surgery that we do routinely. There is nothing to worry about. If you do have any concerns, do write back to me. I hope this helps. Thank you and take care.
