Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My nephew has been diagnosed with ADHD. The weird thing is that we have been considering him from childhood as someone with a mental health disorder. He turned 19 last month; we were in transit when a gentleman doctor approached, and this was the first time we saw him interacting with a stranger so naturally on the first time. The doctor gave us his card for his private practice and told us to come to see him. My nephew might have an attention deficit rather than a mental health issue. Please advise how to proceed.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I feel your concern about your nephew. It would be very beneficial if I could have more details about your nephew, for example, his literacy level, school function, speech ability, and social interaction. Moreover, a general description of his behavior is necessary. For example, is he impulsive or has significant mood swings? Can he focus on a task? Does he have good planning ability?
With the above-mentioned data, judgment would be more possible. Frankly, with your description alone, I cannot confirm or reject that doctor's diagnosis. My recommendation is to use the visit card and search about that doctor's specialty on the web. If you find that he is an expert in the field and there is good feedback from his patients, set an appointment with him and give your nephew a chance. Because ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is relatively treatable, and his function may significantly improve.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
