Can wearing braces increase the risk of alveolar bone loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently did a panoramic scan that showed my bones are too weak or non-existent, and that my teeth will soon fall off. My teeth are shaking, and one will almost fall off. I had braces in the past.

I just wanted to know what options we can take to start a proper treatment plan. I am attaching my scan reports for you to review.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I suggest you visit a periodontist and get yourself properly evaluated. I have seen the attached reports (the attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). You may need multiple bone grafts, and we need to find the root cause of your aggressive periodontitis.

The bone loss may be because of some systemic disease like diabetes or any other issues. If you may follow the query, please provide the information:

1. For how long have you been losing teeth?

2. Is there any underlying cause, like braces or diabetes?

3. Have you done any scaling before or not?

The upper anterior has lost almost all the supporting bone, but you need to prevent the other teeth from further loss.

I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
