How to manage a receding hairline, hair fall, and dandruff?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a slight receding hairline along with hair fall and dandruff, or white residue. I would like to consult regarding this.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on your age, the pattern of hair loss, and your description, this appears to be androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss). In this condition, hair follicles in the frontal and temporal regions of the scalp become genetically sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This leads to gradual thinning of hair, shortening of the hair growth cycle, and eventual miniaturization of hair strands. Along with this, the presence of dandruff can further worsen hair fall.

I would suggest the following measures:

  • You may start topical Minoxidil 5% solution or spray. Apply it twice daily to a dry scalp. Use approximately five sprays per application and gently spread it using your fingertips. Avoid washing the hair for at least four hours after application. Some initial hair shedding during the first few weeks is common and temporary.

  • Use a medicated shampoo containing Ketoconazole with Zinc approximately two times per week. Leave the shampoo on the scalp for three to five minutes before rinsing. This helps reduce dandruff, scalp inflammation, and conditions that can aggravate hair fall.

  • You may also take a once-daily multivitamin supplement containing biotin, zinc, and other essential micronutrients. Supplements can support hair health if there is an underlying nutritional deficiency, but they work best when combined with proper topical treatment and a balanced diet.

Try to maintain a healthy routine by getting adequate sleep, managing stress, consuming sufficient protein, and avoiding excessive hair styling, heat exposure, or frequent oil application. Avoid experimenting with multiple home remedies or harsh hair products, as these may increase scalp sensitivity and worsen hair fall. Visible improvement in hair growth is usually seen within three to six months of consistent treatment.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
