Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Since I ate shrimp, I have been experiencing itchiness on my lips, accompanied by small red bumps, dryness, scaliness, and swelling on the upper lip (initially in a small area). Now, it is becoming more itchy, redder, scalier, and more painful, with additional small bumps, and the swelling persists, making my lips extremely dry.

Initially, I tried self-medicating with a lip ointment I purchased online for two weeks, but there was no improvement. Consequently, I decided to seek an online consultation. The first recommendation was to use a soothing lip balm and Hydrocortisone cream for two weeks. Despite following this advice for two months, I only experienced temporary relief. For the second online consultation, I was advised to use a lip gel, but unfortunately, my condition has not improved. There has been no change, and it seems to be gradually worsening. I can no longer endure this; please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am very sorry about your medical condition. Do not worry; I am here to take care of you.

It appears to be angioedema due to food allergies (possibly shrimp allergy). Another possibility is cheilitis due to atopy. It could be attributed to contact allergens such as a new toothpaste, irritation secondary to mouthwash, exposure to extreme weather conditions, atopic factors, dehydrated skin, or a possible allergy to external stimuli such as citrus, nuts, pineapple, garlic, seafood (shrimp), brinjal, etc., or stress-induced. I suggest you apply Desonide cream at night to the affected area for ten days. Moisturize your lips frequently using a water-based moisturizer. Avoid cosmetics with fragrances. Steer clear of known triggers. Drink seven to eight glasses of water daily to stay hydrated. Also, avoid stress and strive to be stress-free, as stress is a significant contributing factor.

I also suggest taking the tablet Prednisolone 10 mg once a day before breakfast for three days. Apply Petroleum jelly at night for ten days to soothe the lesion. Take Zinc supplements once a day after dinner for 30 days. If there is irritation, consider taking the tablet Loratadine 10 mg once a day after breakfast for ten days. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent.

Thanks for using icliniq, and have a nice day.
