Is ankylosing spondylitis related to poor posture?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been experiencing neck stiffness and pain for over two years. After undergoing numerous scans and tests, I was finally diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. I am struggling to understand how I developed this condition. I have tried various treatments, including painkillers and exercises, but nothing has provided significant relief.

  1. Could it be related to poor posture or a lack of physical activity?
  2. Could you please explain what causes ankylosing spondylitis and whether there is anything more effective I can do to manage it?

The pain and stiffness are making it difficult to move around and often interfere with my daily routine. I would like to know if this is a condition I will have to live with permanently or if there are ways to improve my quality of life and regain a sense of normalcy.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As you have mentioned, you have been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory condition that primarily affects the spine, causing pain and stiffness. The exact reason why it affects some individuals and not others is not fully understood. While there is a genetic component associated with AS, the precise mechanisms remain unclear.

Poor posture and lack of physical activity are not the causes of ankylosing spondylitis, but they can exacerbate the symptoms.

Here are some management strategies that may help:

  1. Physical therapy: Engaging in regular exercise can improve flexibility and strength. Stretching exercises, in particular, can be highly beneficial.
  2. Medications: While pain relievers can provide temporary relief, anti-inflammatory medications are often more effective for managing symptoms. All medications should be taken under the supervision of your treating physician.
  3. Posture awareness: Maintaining good posture throughout the day can help reduce strain on your spine.
  4. Heat and cold therapy: Applying a heating pad can alleviate stiffness, while cold packs can help reduce inflammation.
  5. Mindfulness and stress management: Practices such as meditation or mindfulness can help manage chronic pain and improve overall well-being.

Ankylosing spondylitis is not a condition of extreme concern, and the prognosis is generally good. With effective pain management and the right approach, you can significantly improve your quality of life. Proper treatment and guidance will enable you to live a fulfilling and active life.

Take care, and feel free to reach out with any further questions or concerns.

Thank you.
