Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

After spending three months visiting the community center in my neighborhood, I recently discovered fragments of asbestos cement on the roof while trying to retrieve a ball. I estimate that I spent around 15 minutes on the roof. As a precautionary measure, I have stopped visiting the community center. I would like to understand the level of risk associated with this three-month exposure and the likelihood of developing asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma. Additionally, I have reached out to the Ministry of Environmental Quality in the local municipality, but until the hazard is addressed, I prefer to stay away from the premises.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers, typically spanning several years, can increase the risk of developing conditions like mesothelioma. However, it is important to understand that not all individuals exposed to asbestos will develop mesothelioma. This disease is commonly found among workers who have had extensive exposure to asbestos over long periods, such as miners, plumbers, fitters, and similar professions.

In your specific case, the duration of your exposure is relatively short, making it highly unlikely to cause asbestos-related diseases or mesothelioma. Moreover, it is commendable that you have taken the necessary precautions by avoiding visiting the location where asbestos exposure may have occurred. Therefore, there is no need for you to be overly concerned about potential health risks associated with asbestos in your situation.

I hope this answer helped you,

Thank you.
