Can asthma get worse after COVID-19 infection?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been suffering from uncontrolled asthma after COVID-19 infection turned my life upside down. My lungs feel permanently damaged. I cannot walk up a single flight of stairs. Steroids made me gain 40 pounds, and now I am pre-diabetic. I completely lost my singing career. Coughing fits are so bad. I tried every inhaler, but nothing worked. Doctors keep changing medications, but there is no improvement. Please help.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
You need to plan for a few tests, pulmonary function tests, imaging, or identifying triggers (like allergens or environmental irritants), which might guide better treatment. For severe asthma, biologic therapies targeting specific inflammatory pathways (e.g., monoclonal antibodies like Dupilumab) could help when conventional treatments fail. Lifestyle modifications can also play a role in easing symptoms. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs, which include breathing exercises and gradual physical activity, may improve lung function and stamina over time. For steroid-induced weight gain and prediabetes, consult a dietitian to create a plan that supports blood sugar control and gradual weight loss. Emotionally, the impact on your singing career and family life is profound. Consider support groups or counseling for coping strategies. With the right combination of medical care and emotional support, small steps toward recovery are possible.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
