How to stop dependence on oral tablets for asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have asthma problems. During the lockdown, I started taking Theo-Asthalin tablets. Now I am addicted to the tablet. When I am not taking medicine, I feel respiratory illness. Could you please help?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for your writing in, and I understand your concern.

Treatment of asthma is based on the severity of asthma. To know the severity, we need a pulmonary function test (PFT). Ideally, the best treatment of asthma is a regular inhaler, Foracort (Formoterol and Budesonide) or Seroflo (Salmeterol and Fluticasone propionate). Oral tablets have many side effects; hence, inhalers are preferred and recommended.

I hope you find the reply useful.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply. When I stop taking the tablets, I feel respiratory illness. How can I stop taking medicine? Can you suggest any inhaler or any method to overcome the use of tablets?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest you take Foracort (200 mcg) inhaler one puff twice daily or take Seroflo 125 mcg inhaler one puff twice daily. You can take either of these, whichever is available. I suggest watching videos online regarding the proper technique of inhaler use.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
