Is it safe to give soy milk to a 9-month-old with asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My kid is 19 months old and has asthma. We are giving her 6 to 7 fluid ounces of fortified soy milk twice a day, as she is not interested in drinking regular milk. She has dark stools when she drinks soy milk. Is it safe to give soy milk to kids?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, it is safe to give soy milk to the child as long as she is not known to have any soy-protein allergy. Please check the iron content of the soy-milk product that you are giving. It must be because of the iron content of the soy product that the child is passing black-colored stools when you give soy milk. It is normal to pass such stools when excess iron is consumed.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
