Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have used an antifungal shoe spray and would like to know whether it is effective enough to completely eliminate the fungus and reduce the risk of reinfection.
Is it possible to completely eliminate fungus from contaminated footwear after having athlete's foot, or should the shoes be thrown away to prevent reinfection?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Athlete’s foot (fungal infection) can certainly raise concerns about reinfection from footwear. In most cases, contaminated shoes do not necessarily need to be thrown away. Fungal organisms can survive in shoes, especially in warm and moist environments, but appropriate cleaning and antifungal measures can significantly reduce this risk.
Antifungal shoe sprays can be helpful and may decrease fungal contamination, but no product can guarantee 100 percent complete elimination of fungal spores in every situation.
To reduce the chance of reinfection, I would recommend:
Continue treatment of the athlete's foot until fully resolved and complete the entire treatment course.
Allow shoes to dry completely between uses and avoid wearing the same pair on consecutive days, if possible.
Wash socks regularly and change them daily (more frequently if your feet sweat excessively).
Consider washing removable insoles or replacing them if they are old or heavily worn.
Keep your feet dry and dry carefully between the toes after bathing.
Continue using antifungal powder or spray in your footwear during treatment, if advised.
Shoes are generally considered for replacement if they are very old, heavily worn, have persistent odor or moisture retention, or if recurrent infections continue despite proper treatment and hygiene measures.
Should you have continuing recurrence even after undergoing treatment, kindly inform me of the antifungal drug that you are taking and the duration of your symptoms, since there may be times when recurring symptoms point to incomplete treatment or misdiagnosis.
Please share some clear pictures of your foot and let me know about any medication you have used previously to treat athlete's foot.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
