How does Vitamin D3 improve both hives and eczema at 28?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had hives on and off for years and was told that it is chronic urticaria. The strange thing is that when I started taking vitamin D3 for low levels, not only did the hives calm down, but my eczema patches also improved significantly.

  • Why does a 28-year-old with hives find that vitamin D3 also clears eczema?

  • Is this just a coincidence, or does vitamin D actually help calm immune overreaction in both urticaria and eczema?

  • Does this mean that I was deficient, or that my immune system is extra sensitive?

I am confused because no one has explained this connection, and I am scared to stop the supplements in case everything flares up again.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq. com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

The condition you experienced is something doctors do see in some people with both chronic urticaria and atopic dermatitis (eczema), and it does not sound strange or imaginary.

Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is involved in immune regulation and skin barrier function, so when levels are low, the immune system in certain individuals can become more reactive or imbalanced.

In some patients, correcting a vitamin D deficiency appears to reduce inflammatory signaling and calm mast cell activity, which may help hives while also improving skin barrier health and inflammation associated with eczema.

This does not necessarily mean that the immune system is abnormal, but it may suggest that the deficiency was contributing to how strongly the skin and immune system were reacting.

Not everyone experiences a dramatic improvement with vitamin D3, so noticing a clear difference may indicate that the deficiency genuinely played a role. It is also important to remember that chronic urticaria and eczema are both immune-mediated conditions, so it is possible for one treatment that helps stabilize immune activity to improve both conditions at the same time.

Vitamin D3 supplements should not be stopped abruptly without discussing it with a doctor, especially if the levels were significantly low before treatment.

Usually, the safest approach is to recheck vitamin D blood levels and continue an appropriate maintenance dose rather than taking very high doses indefinitely.

Many people require long-term maintenance therapy to keep vitamin D levels stable, particularly if symptoms tend to flare again when the levels decrease.

I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions at any time, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
