How to manage attention deficit hyperactivity disorder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am reaching out because my child has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and it has been quite a journey for us. He struggles a lot with learning new things and is very impulsive, often not recognizing danger or understanding consequences. I am really worried about how this will affect him in the long run. Will this always be a mental health issue for him? Are there ways to help him cope better with these challenges? We have tried some behavioral interventions, but his impulsiveness and lack of focus seem to persist. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

I can understand your concern

I am sorry to hear your son has problems with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Dealing with ADHD can be challenging, but many strategies and interventions can help your child cope better with the symptoms.

The very first thing is to understand what ADHD is. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. It is important to recognize that ADHD can persist into adulthood, but with appropriate management, individuals can lead successful and fulfilling lives. It can have a long-term impact, especially when it comes to:

1. Academic challenges: ADHD can affect learning and academic performance, but with support, children can achieve their potential.

2. Social and emotional impact: Impulsiveness and inattention can lead to social difficulties, but social skills training can be beneficial.

3. Career and life skills: ADHD may require ongoing strategies for time management and organization, but many adults with ADHD find ways to leverage their strengths.

Are there ways to help him cope better with these challenges?

Yes, there are some strategies to help your child, including:

1. Behavioral interventions: Reward desired behaviors to encourage repetition (also known as positive reinforcement). Establish and maintain daily routines to provide structure. Set clear and concise rules and expectations.

2. Educational support: Work with the school to create an IEP (individualized education program) tailored to your child’s needs. Provide additional academic support where needed. Ensure the classroom environment is conducive to your child’s learning (e.g., seating arrangements, breaks, etc.).

3. Medical interventions: Consult with a healthcare provider about medication options. Medications can help manage symptoms and improve focus. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT- a psycho-social intervention that aims to reduce symptoms of various mental health conditions, primarily depression and anxiety disorders) can help your child develop coping skills and manage symptoms.

4. Social skills training: Practice social situations through role-playing exercises. Encourage participation in group activities to develop social skills in a structured environment.

5. Parenting strategies: Focus on your child’s strengths and celebrate small victories. Be patient and consistent with your approaches and interventions. Join support groups for parents of children with ADHD to share experiences and gain insights.

6. Physical activity: Encourage physical activities to help manage hyperactivity and improve concentration. Enroll your child in structured sports programs to channel energy positively.

7. Diet and nutrition: Ensure a balanced diet with adequate nutrients to support overall health. Reduce the intake of sugary and processed foods that can exacerbate hyperactivity.

You can work closely with his psychologist or psychiatrist to set up goals and evaluate achievements.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you want more help.

Thank you.
