Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My daughter is 32 days old and is a breastfed baby. She normally passes stool two to three times a day. For the past seven days, she is not regular in pooping. She pooped four times throughout seven days that too like a paste. We consulted a doctor three days before and were told that this is normal and we have to wait for three more days. Today when we consulted the doctor, he told to admit her in the hospital because he will give rectal suppository which needs one-day observation in case if loose stool happens. Then, she will be under medical care. We said we will admit her tomorrow and they prescribed Bifilac sachet 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night for two days.
Is it normal for babies to have irregular pooping? Baby is normal and she is not continuously crying and on Bevon multivitamin with D3 oral drops. Kindly suggest what has to be done. Should I consult a different doctor?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Yes, It is normal for the baby to have irregular pooping for at least three months. If you are saying that the baby was passing stool two to three times a day before, then, I will say increase breastfeeding frequency and duration. Baby passing paste like motion can be due to inadequate breastfeeding. If the baby is fed well, no irritability or abdominal fullness or distension, the baby is playful and passing adequate urine (five to six times a day), then I will suggest you to wait. I do not think there is a need for treatment at this stage.
I do not recommend rectal suppository at this early age as the baby is playful, passing urine adequately and there is no abdominal distension. If feeding improves (breastfeeding every two hourly), pooping habits shall improve. You can stop multivitamin and D3 drop till pooping improves. I will encourage the focus on breastfeeding. The mother should take a lot of fruits, vegetables, and enough water.
