How do I overcome leg and back pain on the left side of the body?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have pain in my back on the left side and center and sometimes in my left leg. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I suggest the following-

  1. Avoid lifting heavy weights.
  2. Avoid arching your back; bend your knees to pick up something from the floor.
  3. Avoid sitting for long hours.
  4. Avoid two-wheeler rides.
  5. Improve your posture while sitting.
  6. Try to get up from the chair every 20 minutes, take a quick walk around, and then continue working. Always sit on a chair wth back support.
  7. Do not get up suddenly from a sleeping position. Instead, turn to the side and then get up.
  8. Take bed rest if severe pain persists.
  9. Do hot fermentations locally over the affected area at least twice daily.

It is best to get X-rays done of the lower back, X-ray LS (lumbar spine)- AP (anteroposterior), and lateral views. Follow up with X-rays. It is helpful to do the following activities-

  1. Do physiotherapy.
  2. Mckenzie's back extension exercises.
  3. Back core strengthening exercises.
  4. Glutei strengthening exercises.
  5. Passive straight leg raising exercises.
  6. These exercises can be done initially under a supervision of a physiotherapist or learned to do at home. Start physiotherapy once the pain reduces.Only regular exercises can give results. After the pain reduces, the following activities are good for you,
  7. Swimming, yoga, and walking are good.
  8. Jogging, running, and weight lifting may aggravate back problems.

This is only a second opinion platform. This professional suggestion I provided stands subject to the actual examination of the report/image and is based entirely on my inputs. It should be correlated with clinical findings. I hope it was helpful.

Thank you.
