What is the most effective treatment for balanitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been suffering from balanitis for a few months. I am using an antifungal cream Miconazole nitrate 2 % to avoid it. Until I use antifungal cream all rashes or infections disappear, but once I stop applying the cream all symptoms start again. Symptoms are red skin around the head of the penis and the only time I discovered it was when I was sleeping. I had a sensation of itchiness. I found little on my penis.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing discomfort. Balanitis, which is inflammation of the head of the penis, can have various causes including fungal infections, bacterial infections, poor hygiene, or irritation from certain substances. Using an antifungal cream like Miconazole nitrate 2 % is a common treatment for balanitis caused by fungi. However, if the symptoms return once you stop using the cream, it may indicate that the infection has not been fully cleared or that an underlying cause must be addressed. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Follow proper hygiene practices, including washing the affected area with mild soap and warm water daily and gently drying it afterward.

2. Avoid any potential irritants such as harsh soaps, perfumed products, or tight-fitting underwear that can further aggravate the condition.

3. Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear to allow the area to breathe and reduce moisture buildup.

4. It would be best to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and to discuss your ongoing symptoms. They may recommend additional treatments such as a different antifungal medication, antibiotics if a bacterial infection is present, or further tests if necessary.

I hope this information will help you.

Kindly follow back if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
