What are the complications of bariatric surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

A cardiologist has advised me to undergo bariatric surgery as soon as possible. I experienced a minor heart attack last month, have been living with diabetes for a decade, and currently have a BMI (body mass index) of 39. Despite being on three different medications, my blood pressure remains elevated. I have been investigating the differences between sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, particularly in terms of their effectiveness in addressing metabolic concerns. My brother underwent surgery and successfully lost weight, but unfortunately, his diabetes returned after five years. I am uncertain whether this is merely a temporary fix or if it could genuinely improve my metabolic health. I am also quite apprehensive about the potential complications involved.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Considering your medical background, bariatric surgery may be a crucial solution in enhancing your health. Both gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy are effective procedures; however, gastric bypass tends to better address metabolic concerns, resulting in more substantial weight loss and improved management of diabetes. It is important to note that while it can lead to significant improvements, it is not a guaranteed solution, and adopting lifestyle changes is important for sustaining long-term results.

Although complications can occur, they are typically minor. It is vital to collaborate closely with your healthcare team to track your progress and address any challenges that may arise. Recovery periods can differ, but many patients find they can return to work within two to four weeks.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
