What is the cause of bloatedness after having a meal or tea?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been severely bloated for three weeks now. I get sick every morning, usually from bile, and I get sick after every meal, so I am down to one meal a day. I get sick in the mornings (normally just bile) and after tea (I only eat one meal a day because I do not want to be sick at work).

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq .com.

I understand your concern.

Some possible causes of your symptoms include:

1. Gastrointestinal infection: A gastrointestinal infection caused by a virus or bacteria can cause symptoms such as bloating, nausea, and vomiting.

2. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): This is a condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.

3. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): This is a chronic condition that affects the large intestine and can cause bloating, abdominal pain, and changes in bowel habits.

4. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): This is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the digestive tract and can cause symptoms such as severe bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

5. Gastroparesis: This is a condition where the stomach takes longer than normal to empty its contents, causing nausea, vomiting, and bloating.

Firstly, I would like to rule out IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) as there are no specific tests for it. Follow a low FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) diet. Search on the internet about it, and you will get the details. Try it for a week. Take over-the-counter PPI (protein pump inhibitors) in addition. If no resolution of symptoms after one week. I suggest you undergo the following laboratory tests.

1. CBC (complete blood count).

2. Check the levels of ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate).

3. Check TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) levels.

4. Also check vitamin B12 levels.

Kindly follow up if you have more queries.

I hope this will help you out.

Thank you.
